The countdown is on for the complete elimination of HCFC-22 in the home air conditioning industry

The home appliance industry completely eliminated R22 refrigerant into the countdown
According to the Montreal Protocol, R22 refrigerant has been stopped in developed countries and can still be produced in developing countries, but its production and use deadline is 2030.
On January 26, 2021, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the Notice on The Issuance of 2021 Production, Use and Import Quotas for Ozone Depleting Substances (hereinafter referred to as the Notice). According to the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Air Pollution, Regulations on the Management of Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and other relevant provisions, 20 enterprises will be issued with a production quota of 292,795 tons of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) in 2021, and 46 units will be issued with a use quota of 31,726 tons of hydrochlorofluorocarbons in 2021.
Compared with 2020, the production quota of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCS) including HCFC-22 will remain unchanged in 2021, while the use quota will be significantly reduced, further eliminating HCFCS in China's home appliance industry.
The hCFC-containing (HCFC) production quota will be issued for hCFC-141B, HCFC-142B, HCFC-22, HCFC-123, HCFC-124 and HCFC-133A. Among them, HCFC-141B is a foaming agent used in the refrigerator and water heater industry. As the foaming system in the refrigerator industry has been upgraded to HFC-245FA + cyclopentane foaming system, and on January 1, 2019, the water heater industry has completely banned the use of HCFC-141B. Hcfc-141b has been used less and less in the home appliance industry. The total production quota for hCFC-141B in 2021 is 50,878 tonnes, unchanged from 2020.
Compared to the production quota for HCFC-22, the total use quota for hCFC-22 in the home air conditioning industry in 2021 is 31,726 tons, a decrease of 3,489 tons from 35,215 tons in 2020. This is closely related to the refrigerant switch in the household air conditioning industry. The market share of HCFC-22 air conditioners in the home air conditioning industry was about 20% in 2019, and this proportion will continue to decline in 2020. China's domestic air conditioning industry has made remarkable achievements in phasing out HCFC-22.
The HCFC-22 phase-out management strategy for the Domestic air conditioning industry in China from 2021 to 2026 has been approved by the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund, and has committed to phasing out 70% of hCFC-22 consumption by 2026, which is more than required by the Montreal Protocol schedule to achieve hCFC-22 reductions. We will make more contributions to China's implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
